Description:
Learning Leaders recruits, trains and supports up to 10,000 school volunteers who work with over 230,000 students — over one-fifth of the New York City public school population — in 450 schools throughout the five boroughs.
Trained and screened volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, ESL, math and other academic subjects at the elementary and middle school level, as well as non-instructional aid such as general office and library assistance. Volunteers also supplement school curriculum with enrichment programs such as book clubs.
Students gain academic knowledge, but also confidence, self-determination and proof of their own potential. Volunteers treasure the opportunity to make lasting contribution to another’s life, far beyond the classroom. Teachers value a trusted partner in their classroom who gives them reliable support and assistance.
Mission Statement:
Learning Leaders' mission is to help New York City public school students succeed by training volunteers to provide individualized instructional support and other school-based support, and by equipping parents to foster their children's educational development.
