Volunteer Tax Preparer

Prepare income taxes for low-income individuals with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program hosted by People's Federal Credit Union, a division of Self-Help FCU in West Oakland.
As a community development credit union, People's provides underserved individuals in Oakland the opportunity to enter the financial mainstream - often for the first time , build assets, and improve their economic situations.
At our VITA site we provide an alternative to commercial tax preparation firms that charge taxpayers excessive fees and encourage them to borrow their refunds at high interest rates. Your help is needed to permit hard-working families to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and receive all the refunds they are due.
Volunteer tax preparers will be asked to:
• Work 3 hours per week during the tax season (Jan 27 – Apr 15).
• Complete a free self-paced on-line course on federal tax law (estimated 25 hours) and pass an exam.
• Attend a class room training/orientation session at the end of January.
The tax site is located at Mandela Gateway, across from the West Oakland BART station.
Volunteers are needed: Wed and Thurs 5:30pm-8:30pm and Sat 9:30am -2:30pm.

We are looking for individuals with:
• Tax preparation skills, i.e. have prepared your own, or a willingness to learn.
• Good computer skills.
• Spanish language skills are a plus.
